Recording audio in your browser

Most people reach for an audio recorder at an awkward moment: a call that just became important, an idea worth capturing before it evaporates, an interview starting in thirty seconds. Installing software is exactly the wrong thing to be doing then. This recorder opens in a tab and starts capturing as soon as you grant microphone permission.

It uses the Web Audio API and MediaRecorder, the same recording interfaces built into every modern browser. That has a useful consequence for privacy: the audio is captured and encoded on your own machine. It is never streamed to a server, which means there is no upload to wait for and nothing of yours sitting in someone else's storage.

Recordings save as WAV. It is a larger file than MP3, but it is uncompressed, so nothing is thrown away — which matters if the recording is going into a transcription tool or an editor afterwards. Every operating system and audio application opens WAV without a converter.

Browser support

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera all support in-browser recording on desktop, and mobile Safari and Chrome support it on iOS and Android. Browsers only allow microphone access over a secure HTTPS connection, and they will always ask your permission first — if you dismiss that prompt, the recorder cannot hear anything until you re-allow it in your site settings.

Getting a clean recording

  • Use a headset or external microphone if you have one — it beats a laptop's built-in mic by a wide margin.
  • Sit close to the microphone and away from hard walls, which cause echo.
  • Close anything noisy: fans, notifications, other browser tabs playing audio.
  • Record a ten-second test first and play it back before something you cannot repeat.
  • Use pause rather than stop if you need a break, so you end up with one continuous file.

Turning a recording into text

A recording is only half the job if what you actually need is a searchable, quotable document. Upload the WAV file to Transgate and you get a transcript with punctuation, timestamps and optional speaker labels across more than 100 languages, which you can export as TXT, DOCX, or a subtitle file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this online audio recorder really free?

Yes. Recording, pausing and downloading your audio is completely free, with no account and no watermark. We only charge if you go on to use Transgate to transcribe the recording into text.

Do I need to install or download anything?

No. The recorder runs entirely in your browser using the standard Web Audio API. There is nothing to install, no extension, and no signup — open the page and press record.

How is my data protected?

Your recording is captured and processed locally on your device and is never uploaded to our servers. Nothing leaves your computer unless you choose to transcribe it with Transgate.

What file format do recordings save in?

Recordings download as WAV, an uncompressed format that every audio editor, transcription tool and operating system can open. WAV also avoids the quality loss that comes with re-encoding to MP3.

Is there a recording time limit?

No. There is no artificial cap on length. The only real limit is your device's available memory and storage, so hour-long recordings are fine on a typical laptop.

Can I pause a recording and continue later?

Yes. Press pause to stop capturing without ending the take, then resume when you are ready. The timer counts recorded audio only, so it reflects the true length of your file.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The recorder works in mobile browsers on both iOS and Android. On iOS you need Safari or another WebKit-based browser, and you will be asked to grant microphone permission the first time.

Why can't the recorder hear my microphone?

Almost always a permissions issue. Check that you allowed microphone access when the browser prompted, that the correct input is selected in the dropdown, and that no other app has exclusive control of the microphone. Browsers also require a secure HTTPS connection to access audio hardware.

Can I turn the recording into text?

Yes. Record here, then upload the WAV file to Transgate to get an accurate transcript with punctuation and optional speaker labels, in over 100 languages. New accounts include 20 minutes of free transcription.
